The Gimli Glider: A Story of Airmanship,

The Gimli Glider: A Story of Airmanship, Leadership, and Calm Under Pressure

Aviation is full of remarkable moments, events that remind us why training, teamwork, and composure matter. Few stories capture those qualities as powerfully as the Gimli Glider, the nickname given to an Air Canada Boeing 767 that safely landed in Gimli, Manitoba, on July 23rd, 1983, after running out of fuel mid-flight.

This extraordinary event has become one of the most studied and admired examples of airmanship in modern aviation history. At its center is Captain Bob Pearson, whose quick thinking and unconventional flying skills helped turn a potentially catastrophic situation into one of aviation’s most astonishing survival stories.

A Routine Flight That Became Anything But

Air Canada Flight 143 departed Montreal for Edmonton with 69 passengers and crew. Partway through the flight, the aircraft experienced a total loss of power, both engines failed due to a fuel miscalculation caused by a complex chain of human and procedural errors during Canada’s aviation transition to metric measurements.

Without engines, the aircraft lost thrust, electrical power, and hydraulic pressure. The crew suddenly found themselves flying a 132-ton glider.

Skill Meets Calm in the Cockpit

What happened next has been retold in classrooms, simulators, and hangars across the world.

Captain Pearson, a seasoned pilot with glider experience, used his knowledge to stabilize the powerless aircraft. Working closely with First Officer Maurice Quintal and the cabin crew, the team executed a series of rapid decisions, ultimately guiding the 767 toward a former military airfield in Gimli, Manitoba, which, unbeknownst to them, had been converted into a recreational drag racing strip and was hosting a public event at the time.

Among those on board that day was Pearl, who would later become Captain Pearson’s partner. Her experience as a passenger offers a unique and deeply human perspective on the event — one that adds even more dimension to the story of the Gimli Glider.

With no engines, no thrust reversers, and limited hydraulics, the landing was anything but straightforward. Yet the crew brought the aircraft safely to the ground. Thanks to their efforts, everyone on board survived.

Why the Gimli Glider Matters Today

More than four decades later, the Gimli Glider remains a case study in:

  • Crisis decision-making
  • Crew resource management (CRM)
  • Professionalism under pressure
  • The importance of continuous learning and adaptability

For aviation students, instructors, and seasoned pilots alike, this story is a reminder that skill means more than technical knowledge, it also means resilience, communication, and teamwork.

A Special Evening with Captain Bob Pearson

49th Degree Aviation was honoured to host Captain Bob Pearson, along with Pearl, who shared her firsthand experience as a passenger on that flight. Hearing the story from both perspectives offered a rare insight into not only what unfolded in the cockpit, but also what passengers witnessed, felt, and endured that day.

From the initial realization that something was wrong to the split-second decisions made during the final approach, Captain Pearson’s account underscores the human side of aviation, one made of fast thinking, humility, training, and trust.

We are deeply grateful to Captain Pearson and Pearl for spending their evening with our community and allowing us to learn from such an iconic moment in aviation history.

Continuing the Legacy of Learning

At 49th Degree Aviation, we believe in the power of shared experience. Events like this aren’t just stories, they’re opportunities to grow as pilots and as a community. The Gimli Glider reminds us that preparation matters, but so does the ability to adapt when the unexpected happens.

We encourage our mentees, mentors, and members to continue exploring these lessons, asking questions, and engaging with the professionals who helped shape our industry.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this unforgettable session.

Blue skies, and stay tuned for more events that inspire, educate, and bring our aviation community together.
